Slashing Dragon and Exodus Destiny Dragon have been working on OpenArthurianX6 for a few years now, in an attempt to create an open-source game engine that can be used to develop Ultima 6-like games. It is a curious thing — especially given the recent renaissance in both independent game development and pixel art games — that, outside of Savage Empire and Martian Dreams, the Ultima 6 style of game has not had any notable imitators.
OpenArthurianX6 aims to address that, by providing an engine that is as full-featured as that of Ultima 6, and which is particularly suited to developing games with a similarly oblique perspective. Ultimately, it will allow for the creation of 2D, top-down games using orthogonal grid maps, with an hybrid real-time/turn-based control scheme similar to that of Ultima 6. Planned features of the engine include NPC schedules, day/night cycles, multi-character parties with advanced party member AI, camping, a robust dialogue engine, and a crafting system.
You can actually help support further development on OpenArthurianX6 on Indiegogo, and you can grab the engine’s source code from GitHub as well.
