The Age of Singularity project is an attempt to re-create Ultima 6 in 3D, using Blender and the Unity engine. One of the main goals of the project is to re-create — and, indeed, match item-for-item — the interactive feel of Ultima 6; developer Eric Adam Hovis explains his disdain for the plastic, theme-park worlds of many modern RPGs in a lengthy development blog post.
The actual world map is not a one-to-one re-creation of Ultima 6’s map; that serves as its basis, but elements from many other Ultima games have been incorporated as well. A web-based viewer for the map can be found on the project website. The website also features a large catalogue of images, some for reference and some featuring work being done on the project; a sampling of the latter can be seen below.
As can be seen, the good Mr. Hovis has re-created most — if not all, at this point — items and scenery objects from Ultima 6, and has put together much of the game’s world (including its dungeons). There is much left to be done in terms of populating the world and re-creating the plot and interactivity of Ultima 6, but there seems to be little cause for concern that Age of Singularity will fail to re-create a very Ultima 6-like look.
